what to see and do on the Isle of Skye

The Island has great variety to suit all tastes. It has spectacular scenery surrounded by mountains and the sea. It is said to have a thousand miles of coastline and looking like the fingers of a hand this is easy to understand. No two areas are the same and with the ever changing light, there are some wonderful vistas. Combine all this with a day out walking and you will be well rewarded. For those interested in birds, watch the gannets wheeling and diving off the cliffs or the majestic eagles soaring high above. The so secretive corncrake still lives here.

Boat trips take you to watch the seals and at Elgol, The Bella Jane takes you across Loch Scavaig to the base of The Cuillins.

For the less energetic, visits to The Aros Experience and An Tuireann in Portree give a taste of local history and culture - remember this is Bonnie Prince Charlie country. Dunvegan Castle is the ancient seat of the Clan Macleod, and in the south of the island visit The Clan Donald Centre at Armadale, another historic seat - this time Macdonald, Lord of the Isles.

If you enjoy a sail, The Outer Isles Ferry sails from Uig to Harris and North Uist; make a day of it and join a tour round one of the islands.

Canoeing and Sailing are available from White Wave Activities, golf is at Sconser and Skeabost, and Horse Riding and Pony Trekking near Portree.

Spend a pleasant evening at Skye Scene in Portree - a varied programme of stunning slides and local music and dance.
